"The Race continues to be an inspiration for all involved - whether you are a survivor, a family member, a friend, a newly-diagnosed individual - the list is endless regarding the people that are touched by this event."
In 1998, Susan G. Komen for the Cure®'s
signature fundraising event Susan G. Komen Race
for the Cure® first came to Madison, and Susan G. Komen® Madison Affiliate was founded.
With it came a hope to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing
research, education, screening and treatment programs locally, throughout the country and
worldwide.
For 25 years, Komen for the Cure has led our nation’s charge in the fight against breast
cancer. Nancy Goodman Brinker founded Komen in 1982 to honor a promise she made to her
older sister Susan Goodman Komen. Suzy was just 36 years old when she died of breast cancer.
At that time, breast cancer was rarely discussed in public and little was known about the
disease. Nancy vowed to do everything in her power to find a cure. Today Komen is an
international organization with a network of over 75,000 volunteers working through local
Affiliates such as the Komen Madison Affiliate. For more information about Komen go
to www.komen.org.
Hundreds of Madison area volunteers are the backbone of the organization. They raise
funds, they organize, they govern, and they ensure vital community breast health and
breast cancer programs receive grants from our Affiliate to support education, screening
and treatment for those in need. Over $1.4 million has been raised to fund these local
initiatives, as well as national breast cancer research.
