Komen Advocates Training Program
Breast cancer patients face lonely and uncertain paths as they are diagnosed and sort
through treatment options. Trained patient advocates, especially those who have walked
a similar path, provide information and support critical decisions for the journey.
Survivors often seek opportunities to apply lessons they have learned about health care,
breast cancer and themselves to help others in meaningful ways. Year 1 of the project
witnessed how trained survivor-advocates can make a very real difference in the lives of
newly-diagnosed patients and their families. Komen Advocates confirm that the training
process has made a profound difference in their lives. The second year of this grant will
allow the program to continue to mentor the advocates as they get their stride, and all
advocates have requested that training sessions, in addition to case supervision and support,
continue in 2007. This second year will also see new advocates trained and diversifying
the group by reaching out to the Latina and African American communities.

Treatment Access Fund
The program increases access to breast cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment services
for women who are unable to afford them. Women in need of breast related services that
are not covered by the Wisconsin Well Woman Program, Well Woman Medicaid or other indigent
care programs may submit their medical bills to the Treatment Access Fund for financial
assistance. Based on available funds, medical expenses for eligible women will be paid
directly to the healthcare provider.

Screening and Education Program for Latina Women
The program will provide culturally relevant breast cancer education, case management,
screening and diagnostic and treatment services to under-served Latina women and their
families in Dane County. The program has two main components: 1. Breast cancer prevention
and screening education workshops and community outreach targeting Latina women and their
families presented in Spanish; and 2. Funding for mammograms and diagnostic services for
low-income Latina women who do not qualify for the Wisconsin Well Women Program or other
government programs and who do not have private insurance and for treatment and medication
expenses that are not covered by other programs.

of a Witness Project* program which provides an introduction to the Witness Project;
history; Witness video; Witness role models and storytelling; hands on demonstration of
breast self-exam; information about mammography, clinical breast exam and identification
of community resources for low cost or no cost screening. In addition, the project will

Care-Wear products, counseling/support services, temporary post-operative prosthesis;
cosmetology/wig services, journal writing, a special study on abuse and its correlation
to diagnosis of breast cancer, and group services specifically addressing the needs of

Advances in Multi-Disciplinary Cancer Care: Survivorship Conference
Now in its 6th year, the 2007 Fall cancer conference will focus on survivorship issues of
cancer patients and their caregivers/family members. With the progress and treatment that
research has initiated, more people are surviving and living longer with cancer. However,
there is a need to increase awareness among health professionals about specific physical,
emotional and psychological needs of cancer survivors, and the emotional needs of family
members/caregivers of cancer survivors.
