"At the Race, I see so many people with others - this event makes my heart smile. As a breast cancer survivor (and thriver), I know this event is tremendously reinforcing for all who participate."

Support Groups

Support groups have become an important and widely available resource for breast cancer patients. In general, support groups are designed to increase the support network of cancer patients. However, support groups may vary in terms of their focus. Some are "information-based" educational groups, while others are "emotion-focused" and allow patients to share their feelings. Both types play crucial roles in the recovery process following diagnosis and treatment. Professionals facilitate some of these groups, while others are more informal, taking place in churches or patients' homes. Some groups may have only weekly or monthly meetings, while others are much more involved, adding complementary therapies such as meditation and visualization into their sessions.

Clearly, there is no one model for a successful support group. What is most important is that patients who are interested in a support group find the one that best matches their needs and personal circumstances. At Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Madison Affiliate, we are interested in hearing from you. Have you found the support groups we have listed helpful, do you have comments, or is there a support group that you think we should add to our list?
